The Lion Fish Invasion

lion-fish-bigThis is a Lion Fish that was caught in front of Scuba Shack in the shallows. I went by there this morning to talk to the divemasters and it is definitely true. Even the dolly seen in the pic is in the same spot as the photo. There are none this big out on the reefs and one reason for this might be that in the shallows there are no predators to speak of…..only juveniles and small varieties of fish. There is another Lion Fish next door at Aqua World that they are trying to kill…no luck so far. It has learned to scramble into a large pile of rocks there to hide. It is not as large as the one in the photo.
Lion Fish have to reach a length of at least 7 inches to breed and I have never seen one that large on the reefs, however, they might be some down at 165 feet which is their depth limit. Of course this one is over a foot. In the Caribbean they can reach a length of 18″ where in their natural habitat they only reach 12″ . More unsuspecting fish to eat here since Caribvean fish do not have any knowledge in their genetic makeup which I believe is called instinct. I don’t really know anything more than anyone else….just a wild guess………….Tony
