It’s Cold Out There !!

The temps have fallen and it is pretty chilly out there!! For those going diving today, be sure to cover up both in and out of the water. That wet suit will feel pretty darn good today.

We have a strong norte right now and expect another tomorrow. With is comes some chilly weather and sometimes, choppy water.

So stay warm out there!!

The Lion Fish Invasion

lion-fish-bigThis is a Lion Fish that was caught in front of Scuba Shack in the shallows. I went by there this morning to talk to the divemasters and it is definitely true. Even the dolly seen in the pic is in the same spot as the photo. There are none this big out on the reefs and one reason for this might be that in the shallows there are no predators to speak of…..only juveniles and small varieties of fish. There is another Lion Fish next door at Aqua World that they are trying to kill…no luck so far. It has learned to scramble into a large pile of rocks there to hide. It is not as large as the one in the photo.
Lion Fish have to reach a length of at least 7 inches to breed and I have never seen one that large on the reefs, however, they might be some down at 165 feet which is their depth limit. Of course this one is over a foot. In the Caribbean they can reach a length of 18″ where in their natural habitat they only reach 12″ . More unsuspecting fish to eat here since Caribvean fish do not have any knowledge in their genetic makeup which I believe is called instinct. I don’t really know anything more than anyone else….just a wild guess………….Tony

The Invasion of the Lionfish

To all of our Blue Magic Friends and Dive Buddies,

bluemagiclogo-sml
Many of you are already aware of the threat to our reefs by the invasion of the lionfish, a species not native to this part of the world. This beautiful, yet deadly creature, is a prolific breeder and voracious predator of juvenile fish. Several were accidentally released into Biscayne Bay after a hurricane in Florida destroyed an aquarium over 15 years ago, and to date, they have made their presence known throughout the entire Caribbean.

Up until six months ago, we hadn’t seen any in Cozumel; now, they are everywhere. While we may not be able to completely rid ourselves of this dangerous predator, we at Blue Magic Scuba would like to try and do our part to at least help as much as possible. To that end, we are sponsoring a Lionfish Tournament for all our clients which begins on February 1 and will end on June 15. There will be prizes awarded in several categories for our customers who participate in this one-of-a-kind event including free diving at Blue Magic Scuba, a $500 gift certificate for gear at the local dive shop of your choice, and a 4 night stay at the Fiesta Americana which will include diving as well.

As you can see, Blue Magic Scuba is serious about trying to preserve our reef system, and we want to enlist as many of you as we can to help us. We think that the tournament will be a fun and rewarding experience, and everyone who comes here to dive with us during the tournament period will have a chance to win, even if you spot only one lionfish! And if you bring along a friend or loved one who hasn’t been diving with Blue Magic before, we have a referral bonus for you too.

Download the attached flyer (in PDF format) which provides complete details on the lionfish itself, as well as tournament rules and prizes.

Please don’t hesitate to call or write me with any questions you might have about the lionfish, or the tournament. I’d love to hear from you – better yet, I’d love to see you here in Cozumel diving and helping us catch lionfish! We need all the help we can get. Happy Hunting!

With Best Regards,
